Hair Treatments 101

Hairdressers can be an addictive activity for some, thinking that changing the natural structure of their hair can boost results. Whether you have curly or frizzy hair and need a permanent solution that your hair products just won’t deliver. In-salon treatments mostly have the same outcome, whether it’s called the same name or not.  So we’ve gone the extra step and listed the most wanted treatments to get at the salon and everything you need to know about them.

Keratin

A smoothing treatment that seals the hair cuticle with a coating of protein that eliminates frizz and adds softness and shine, which is often called the ‘Brazillian Blowdry’. The process can take anywhere between one to three hours depending on hair type, length, and fullness. This treatment can also come with some unwanted side effects and could present some safety issues. Keratin treatments typically contain a chemical called formaldehyde which is a carcinogen which means it can cause the growth of cancer cells and trigger other negative side effects. Formaldehyde gas is released into the air when these products are used, which means you may breathe in the fumes, which your body may through the skin. It may also be given off later as the product breaks down. Keratin hair treatments may sound like a quick fix for curly or wavy hair, but it may cost you more in the long-term. There are some treatments that are formaldehyde-free so ask your hairdresser which kind of treatment they use before you go in for an appointment.

Protein & Collagen

Hair treatments (although you can also get this magic in the form of a shampoo or conditioner) are hair treatments loaded with a kind of protein that the hair can absorb. Hair protein treatments strengthen the hair, restore it if it’s been damaged, and fill in gaps between the cuticles thereby supporting the integrity of the hair shaft. Proteins for hair is a slow water loss process, which helps keep hair moisturised. If you feel like your hair would benefit from more protein, you can work your way up to using a wash-off protein product as often as once or twice a week, or you can introduce a protein-rich hair mask like In Natural, Avocado on a regular basis. Avocados are rich in protein as well as Vitamin B, which is an essential vitamin for optimal hair health.

Olaplex Treatment

This is a hair rebonding treatment that restores the most damaged hair to its healthier state. It is the best treatment for coloured or chemically treated hair, Olaplex not only protects the hair from the process to get the desired colour, but it also prevents further damage. Makings the hair stronger, healthier, shinier, and also helps mend some of the previous damage. It works even if you have resorted to over-styling with heated tools and need something to restore your hair to its natural state. This all-round treatment is great for a multitude of benefits to your hair health, and the best part is, there is a 3 step product line that you can take home to continue treatment once a week.
